🚨Can you support a mission in Afghanistan? If so, please go to freetorun.org/donate

The current situation in 🇦🇫Afghanistan has been heartbreaking and harrowing on so many levels for so many, and it’s something that is close to me personally for multiple reasons.

I have seen the incredible work that @freetorunngo does in Iraq, but the scale of impact of the programmes in Afghanistan has been much larger.

Their mission is to use adventure sports to develop female leaders in regions of conflict and they have worked with thousands of young women in Afghanistan. Free to Run’s female participants include activists, TEDx speakers, Fulbright scholars, athletes with disabilities, national and international marathon runners, community leaders and so much more.

As the deadline for troop withdrawal draws nearer and the security situation continues to intensify I know first hand that @theultrarunnergirl and the @freetorunngo staff are working around the clock to try and ensure the safety and security of Afghan staff and families. Friends, contacts and allies are supporting wherever possible but nothing is assured in the current situation and funding is now critical both to support safety and security, and the continuation of programmes.

If you have the means to support, please google “free to run donate” and you’ll find the top links to freetorun.org and justgiving.

When you’ve picked a lot of the routes that are low hanging fruit nearby, and the weather isn’t playing ball, you have to be a little more creative with destinations. Here’s @lou.reynolds and @tomripleyguiding afternoon cragging, and warming up for a bigger day to follow, in a fairly rarely traveled, but stunning, alpine valley in the Gran Paradiso range above the @rifugiopontese in Italy.

Bonus points 🥇 to @tomripleyguiding for the location suggestion and I’d highly recommend what is one of the most welcoming huts I’ve been to in the Alps, and with some of the best food!

When there’s a cloudy storm in Chamonix, go through the magic tunnel, and the sky goes blue.

Clouds. Sun. Climbing. Altitude. Breath taking. ...

Finally the first time flying in the UK! Conditions aren’t quite as assured here as there are in Chamonix 💨🌬

Spent a fascinating week in Kurdistan and Northern Iraq with @theultrarunnergirl visiting the work of the NGO she founded @freetorunngo (more on that later) in and around Erbil.

As a part of the world still dealing with the fallout of years of ongoing conflict and the violence and oppression of ISIS most recently, Covid adds just another complex challenge for those living here: not least for those internally displaced from homes across Iraq to which it is still too dangerous to return, like Mosul and Sinjar.

It’s a privilege to have been able to visit, particularly with the world as it is right now. It was a short trip, yet full of many surprises, culture and unexpected landscapes. Erbil is thought to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world with around 7000 years of history.

Here a Kurdish soldier greeted us on the top of the mountain we’d run up in the scorching heat (at over 2000m altitude), asking for photos and offering us water despite the daytime fasting of Ramadan.

Just a small dot in a large ocean of sky.
Thanks to @tom__livingstone and @flyingchamonix for a fun pre-work home and fly. Was all great until I landed in a big pile of 💩
